Wicked Soars High in Portland

Writer: Gwen BrooksGwen Brooks

Keller Auditorium will be playing host to 24 performances of Wicked from July 10 to 28.

It takes an exceptional Broadway musical to go strong for 15 years in an extensive list of countries with very impressive performances.

Wicked is an exceptional musical that has won hearts over anywhere it has found itself. The story gives another look to the "Wizard of Oz," with the perfect blend of amazing songs, fun, and excitement.

The musical starts of by introducing us to the green-skinned Elphaba, and the boisterous Glina, who build a friendship despite their initial angst for each other, leading to one of the most likable songs you, will ever see in a musical "For Good."

The story tells a tale of betrayal and a fight between good and evil. The songs, along with the character portrayal, tell a wonderful story. Although it doesn't quite capture the social injustice, the original story tries to tell; it does provide the audience with its own unique delivery.

Listening to the fantastic Idina Menzel as Elphaba and other talented cast for 15 years has been a spectacle. However, others have stepped into the role to defy odds, and notable mention goes to Sarah Anne Fernandez.

Erin Mackey, who plays Glinda, has also shone. Forget her size, her voice makes up for it, and the growth of her character all through was heartwarming. Although she starts as a very annoying school girl, she grows all through the musical to become a powerful entity.

Wicked along with Dear Evan Hansen and Fiddler on the Roof are all coming to Portland in the 2019/2020 season. Can you guess the one most fans are yearning to see?

Wicked has something for everyone; that's why it is a timeless classic that keeps getting better and better.

It is safe to say that in terms of popularity, it is on the same page as "Hamilton" and "The Book of Mormon."

Keller Auditorium will be playing host to 24 performances during Wicked tour from July 10 to 28. Grab your tickets as soon as possible. Tickets go for $49.00. The musical's run time is 2 hours, 45 minutes with just one intermission.
